8 Basic Tips For An Improved Linkedin Profile

Your LinkedIn profile could be the first thing your new employer sees, it can help Recruiters like us find you, but most importantly this is your way of branding yourself both internally and externally in the employment world.

Choose a professional photo

The best advice here is to use a recent photo, one that actually looks like you. Keep it as a headshot, this way people can see it (especially if they’re squinting at a mobile phone). A clean, clear backdrop and a smile never goes a miss.

Tell a story in your summary

Your summary is your chance to tell your story, it’s best used not to just list your skills or the job titles you’ve had, but to bring your experience to life – tell people what you do, what you love and what makes you stand out from the crowd.

Make your headline more than just a job title

Use the headline field to say a bit more about how you see your role, why you do what you do, and what makes you tick. For example, a Software Developer may want to add what technologies they work with to help them become more visible.

Work keywords in throughout your profile

Once you’ve worked out your keywords and why you want people to find your profile, weave them into your headline, summary, experience, skills, and anywhere else they make sense on your profile. However, try not to overdo it, keep it natural.

Add your training and certifications

Have you completed various certifications? Are you fluent in another language? Did you win a well-known award or write an article for a well-known publication in your industry? Adding this information to your profile is a great way to showcase what makes you unique.

Request Recommendations

Recommendations and personal testimonials written to illustrate the experience of working with you can really add value to your profile, readers can how your peers, seniors and previous colleagues value your work.

Make sure your CV and LinkedIn match

Your CV and LinkedIn don’t have to be identical. But your current and past positions, companies, degrees, and certifications should match up, and so should the dates.

Grow your network

Everyone on LinkedIn has up to 30,000 connections available, don’t be afraid to only connect with people you already know, request and accept connections from people you don’t know who might be able to help you grow in your career.
